Problem Solving and Rational Thinking

Everyone faces problems and worries sometimes. In these situations it really helps to think clearly and rationally.

Here are some ideas on how to approach your problems and worry less:

  • Try to identify the causes of the problems and remember what has worked in the past to solve similar challenges. The successful behaviors and actions can be repeated again.
  • Find various ways to solve problems by brainstorming first. You can note down possible solutions on a piece of paper and think of pros and cons of each option to select the best one.
  • Talk with and ask for advice from other people who have managed to solve similar problems.
  • Sometimes it is beneficial to accept that all incidents and circumstances are not always under your control. You can seek help from other individuals and institutions if things are beyond your control. Depending upon the nature of the problems, seek support from individuals and organisations working for particular groups and communities such as elderly citizens, social activists, volunteers, teachers, health workers, JTA (Agricultural Technicians appointed by the government), human right activists, psychosocial workers, traditional healers and others.
  • Since worry and anxiety affect our body, mind, behavior and relationships we can adopt the measures mentioned in this website in order to lessen these problems. Try our mindfulness, deep breathing, self care, positive self-talk and relaxation techniques.
  • Concentrate more on the issues which are under our control and which we can change to bring positive results.
  • If you think you cannot solve the problem, write down the changes and reactions experienced in your mind and body.By noting down this information you will become more aware of the status of our mind, body and behavior and it will be easier to find different ways to cope. For example, if you are under stress because of unrealistic expectations, try to re-evaluate and revise the expectations to change your thoughts and feelings.
  • If worry and anxiety is overwhelming and your day to day life is seriously affected, then it is advisable to seek professional help from a psychosocial counselor, a psychologist or a psychiatrist.
